As many of you might know, there are groups of dogs: .I choose the 'Working Dogs' for they are probably one of the largest. Here is the total list:
(reference to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_Group_(dogs) )
Alaskan Malamute
Beauceron
Bernese Mountain Dog
Bouvier Des Flandres
Boxer
Bullmastiff
Canadian Eskimo Dog
Dobermann
Dogue De Bordeaux
Entlebucher Mountain Dog
German Pinscher
Giant Schnauzer
Great Dane
Greenland Dog
Hovawart
Leonberger
Mastiff
Neapolitan Mastiff
Newfoundland
Portuguese Water Dog
Pyrenean Mastiff
Rottweiler
Russian Black Terrier
St. Bernard
Siberian Husky
Tibetan Mastiff
There are obviously diffent breeds of dog, and every dog itself is different. So I first need to find at least 3 Dogs that I will be able to relate to. Then I will choose one of the dogs from here to be the dog's 'icon'. We'll start with some dogs, from this set of breeds, and their average hight, I will choose the dog/s with this benifical factor. All result are measured from the dog's wither (shoulders). I have also choosen some dogs that were not on my list above, if you were wondering what was wrong with your eyes.
German Shepard - 68cm
Great Dane - 91cm
Saint Bernards - 68cm
Border Collie - 55cm
Mastiff - 75cm
Beauceron - 70cm
Akita Inu - 69cm
Scottish Deerhound -79cm
Great Pyrenees - 81cm
& Dalmation - 66cm
Average Height: 72cm
Obviously there are more types of dogs out there, but I was trying to gather information on only the tall ones. Mainly for reasons that I tend to picture the dog as 'big', compared to minute condition of a monkey. Also I need to gather an average weight of all the dogs; this of course, is 71cm.
Before I select my dogs, I need to take into account the other aspects, such as weight, length. So I'll continue with first gathering weight for my set of dogs. Weights are in Kilograms:
German Shepard - 40kg
Great Dane - 90kg
Saint Bernards - 71kg
Border Collie - 20kg
Mastiff - 110kg
Beauceron - 45kg
Akita Inu - 54kg
Scottish Deerhound - 43kg
Great Pyrenees - 54kg
& Dalmation - 32kg
Average Weight: 51kg
So we now know a few who we can take out. Both the Border Collie and Dalmation have quite low weight levels and can immediatly be cut out. The German Shepard comes just over the line, but I don't think he'll make it either. Next we come to length... I don't think it is worth displaying this, as it is relatively porportion to the previous set of ranks.
Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Mastiff, Beaucerinm, Akita Inu, Scottish Deerhound, Great Pyrenees.
So now, I get to choose my dogs! The choice rested on me for quite a while, but I think I have decided. The THREE dogs are going to be: the Great Dane, the Mastiff, and the Great Pyrenees. Three dogs with big heights, and quite large weights. If I had a fourth choice, it would the Saint Bernard, but sadly, these are the only three I am going to continue researching.

Great Dane
Height = 91cm Weight = 90kg Life Span = 9yrs The Great Dane (also known as the German Masstif) is famous for being one of the world's tallest dogs. They normally hold the title of world's tallest dog, year after year. Like many large dogs, they consume less food, and thus, have less energy than the average k9. |
English Mastiff
Height = 75cm Weight = 110kg Life Span = 10yrs The English Mastiff, more commonly refered to, as just the mastiff. Recognisable by its enormous feautures, including large head and body. When it comes to mass, it holds its own as the heaviest/biggest dog. The mastiff, has recently increased in world-wide popularity. |
Great Pyrenees
Height = 81cm Weight = 54kg Life Span = 8yrs The Great Pyrenees, commonly used as a livestock guardian. It is a very old breed of dog, but is still popular amoung farmers. It is also quite timid, and its protective instincts can sometimes take over, meaning that you may leave small children/animals around it. Overall, it is confident, gentle, and a great guardian. |
So, there you have it. A brief description, of each of these amazing dogs. But only one will be used. And that hardest challenge now awaits. Which one?
First, the Great Dane. It is known for being, possibly, the tallest dog; and holds records as such. The Mastiff; being the heaviest, and living the longest, it might make a good choice. It also has increased in popularity, over the passed few years. Than theres the Great Pyrenees. With a beautiful coat, lightest weight and protective instincs, it might also make an excellent choice. But in the end, it comes down to which dog would provide the best data, for the research i'm going to be performing. And that dog is...
The Great Dane.! From its perfect height, weight and a long life-span. All within the range of what I wanted.
Read the major research to see this dog being further researched and compared.
Also, you can check out the cat's research.
